Why You Run

You speak in code as though you
want me to know but you
don’t want to tell me
As though you can’t choose between
one or the other

As though you’re scared to cross over
from day into night and so you
step one foot into the twilight only to
find yourself
exactly where you didn’t want to be

in between

You bury your words like a note in a book
like a scrap of paper that you
want me to find but you
don’t want to show me
As though you can’t choose between
one or the other

Because you’re scared to admit that
it’s okay to care and to let it be known
that you care
Because you think it will be
misinterpreted
as something it’s not
Because you worry what your audience will think and you
don’t want to be misunderstood
Because if you don’t spell it out then you
don’t have to admit that maybe
maybe
maybe
you were wrong
all along
maybe you were wrong
all along

So instead

you release your words
into the ether and you
watch them fly away like a
kite
in the wind
