After

Slim fingers
Starched sheets
Pull the corners
Cover my face.

Bodies always look so small
Beneath the white mound
Falling naturally around slim ankles
Hips that carried children
Breasts that nurtured them
Shoulders that carried secrets.

From the earth you came
And to the earth you shall return.
My chest has finally stopped heaving,
My mind has stopped shooting arrows.
My lips cease to say the things I don’t mean
My tears have run dry.

Cry for the injustice of suffering
But don’t cry for me:
Not everyone gets to finish what they started.

Help the men lower my box-
I am comfortable, just do it slowly-
From the earth you came
And to the earth you shall return.

It’s dark and quiet
And peaceful here in the corner
Where they relegate the ones
Who didn’t honor G-d’s gift of life.

At night the ghosts cry
A symphony
Telling the world what they couldn’t hear
In words.

I always knew I came from the earth-
I could never seem to feel worthy of more-
And now to the earth I return.
I am home.
