עוזרת

They didn’t like
The way that she prayed
To the same G-d we would turn to
At most 3 times a day

Spread out on her prayer mat
On the kitchen floor
A spare few minutes
When they weren’t in the dorms

I have davened in stair wells
Libraries, stations, and by rivers
Searching for kavanah
Distracted furtive glances
Fearing discriminatory whispers

They should have lectured us on racism
They should have taught us tolerance
They should have celebrated her commitment
And questioned our morals

Instead, she was fired
Because it made them uncomfortable
That she prayed to Allah
Whilst we learned תורה
